US Online Sports Betting Revenue Roundup

The slower months of the US sports betting calendar haven’t stopped the nation’s biggest markets from producing solid online revenue numbers. Four of the biggest online sports betting states released June revenue figures over the past week, and mobile wagering remains viable across the board.

Betting handle drops didn’t correlate with a dip in revenue in states like New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Indiana. Each of those states realized significant month-to-month revenue gains from May to June, with sportsbooks in those states enjoying healthy hold percentages.

While the NFL season remains a couple of months away, the NBA Playoffs and MLB regular season offer plenty of options for US bettors. The June online sports betting revenue roundup from Gaming Today takes a detailed look at some of the states at the forefront of the online sports betting surge in the US:

June saw a bit of a slowdown in betting interest across the board in the US. A slow month by New Jersey sports betting standards still yielded more than $683 million in online wagering handle, keeping the Garden State atop the nation’s mobile sports betting industry.

The $683,020,655 figure marks a 7% drop in month-to-month online betting handle from May to June. Thanks to a 9.1% hold, however, June finished up with the second-highest monthly online revenue total in 2021 for New Jersey ($62,189,286).

New Jeresy cleared the $5.5 billion mark in annual online handle in 2020, and is on pace to go well past that mark this year. Through June, online handle for 2021 is already at $4,454,904,033 in New Jersey.

If that pace holds, New Jersey will eclipse $9 billion in annual online betting handle in 2021. A betting surge from the upcoming NFL and NCAA football seasons could put that number over $10 billion by the end of the year.

The state’s online sportsbooks have produced $331,117,314 in operator revenue this year, allowing the state to collect $42,935,318 from Internet Sports Tax so far in 2021. The New Meadowlands Racetrack license (FanDuel Sportsbook, PointsBet) account for 57% of all New Jersey mobile sports betting revenue in 2021.

The New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement releases revenue numbers and a press release summary each month.

Much like New Jersey, Pennsylvania’s online sportsbooks realized a revenue increase despite a betting handle dip in June. Mobile sportsbooks took $379,267,760 in bets in Pennsylvania in June, the lowest total for any month of 2021 in the Keystone State.

The lower handle figure didn’t prevent Pennsylvania from raking in the online sports betting revenue last month, however. June saw Pennsylvania’s mobile sports betting apps hold $29,288,710 in revenue, the second-highest total of 2021 in the state.

More than half of total revenue for 2021 comes from FanDuel Sportsbook. DraftKings Sportsbook stands at a distant second among Pennsylvania online sportsbooks.

At the halfway point of 2021, Pennsylvania’s mobile sports betting apps have taken just under $2.8 billion in bets. In 2020, by comparison, the state’s online sportsbooks generated $3.28 billion in handle for the entire year.

Michigan’s online sportsbooks took $235,125,335 in bets in June, marking a 4.9% dropoff month-to-month against May. Through the end of June, the state’s mobile sports betting apps have taken just under $1.5 billion in wagers.

June marked the second-highest revenue month for online sports betting in Michigan, which debuted in January. With FanDuel Sportsbook leading the charge, online sportsbooks earned $16,760,379 in operator revenue last month.

FanDuel, DraftKings Sportsbook, BetMGM, and Barstool Sportsbook have emerged as the frontrunners in the battle for Michigan online sports betting market share.

While June numbers from other states are still pending, Michigan appears poised to persist as a top-five US sports betting market. Only New Jersey, Illinois, Nevada, and Pennsylvania generated more overall betting handle than Michigan in May, and that trend will likely continue in June.

Indiana remains right on Michigan’s heels as the nation’s No. 6 sports betting market based on handle. Online sports betting in the Hoosier State yielded $221,224,718 in wagers in June.

That monthly handle total puts Indiana at just over $1.47 billion in mobile betting handle in 2021. The state generated $1,474,261,091 in online betting handle for the entire year of 2020.

Indiana continues to prove the viability of legal online sports betting, standing as one of the most significant sports wagering hubs in the midwest US. The state’s mobile wagering apps generated $23,285,853 in June revenue.

New additions to the Indiana lineup in recent weeks include BetWay, Barstool Sportsbook, and WynnBET. FanDuel Sportsbook takes the top spot in the Indiana mobile wagering market, with DraftKings Sportsbook and BetMGM also among the most popular choices for bettors in the Hoosier State.
